Michael Jordan turned 50 on Sunday

18 Monday Feb 2013

Financial markets are closed today for the holiday.  I’ll hold off on posting anything investment related for today.

But yesterday was a big day for Chicago sports fans.  Michael Jordan turned 50 on Sunday.  Jordan is certainly one of the greatest athletes that has ever played professional sports.  As a Chicagoan, I am especially appreciative of his skill, determination and the six championship rings that he brought to Chicago.

Outside of basketball, Jordan means little to me.  Sure, Nike and McDonald’s used great marketing prowess turning Jordan into a household brand.  However, as a person, Jordan’s “brand” is hollow.  In fact, it’s non-existent.

There are  few clues as to who Michael Jordan, the individual, is.  Unfortunately, the attached 20-minute induction hall of fame speech is one of them.  To me, it’s not flattering as it shows a petty, immature, selfish and vindictive man.  Some say that this type of competitive nature is necessary in order to be the greatest basketball player ever.  I don’t buy it.  Anyway, you can judge for yourself by watching the speech below, as well as an article describing the evening.

Michael Jordan’s Hall of Fame Enshrinement Speech

Jordan’s night to remember turns petty
